A Digital Signature Certificate is the digital equivalent of your hand written signature, issued by a Licensed Certifying Authority (CA) and are legally valid in India. It may include information like mobile number and PAN number in encrypted form. It is used for digitally signing documents online.
What is difference between Digital Signatures & Digital Signature Certificates?
The term Digital Signature is commonly used to also refer to Digital Signature Certificates, but technically they are different. A digital signature can be an image representation of hand written signature or in some other digital format and have no legal validity. A digital signature certificate on the other hand, is a signature in digital format but issued by a Licensed Certifying Authority in India, after stringent validation of each applicant.
What are the different types of Digital Signature Certificates?
The different types are
1) Class 1 (used for email signatures)
2) Class 2 (discontinued)
3) Class 3 (used for MCA21/Income Tax e-filing, GST, EPFO, CERSAI 2.0, e-tenders/e-procurement, etc.,)
4) DGFT (a special Class 2 digital signature for Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT))
What is a Certifying Authority?
A Certifying Authority (CA) issues digital signature certificates to an applicant after due validation. CAs are issued licenses by the Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India.

What is a USB Token?
A USB Token is a highly secure hardware USB Crypto device (with FIPS 140-2 level rating or higher), used to store a digital signature.
Are USB tokens mandatory?
Yes. USB tokens with CSP version 2.0 is now mandatory for downloading the digital certificate.
Is PAN card detail required to apply for digital signature certificate (DSC)?
No. PAN is not mandatory for getting a digital signature. However, in order to use the same for Income Tax e-filing, PAN details need to be added in the DSC. Therefore it is always recommended to use the Pan details as well.
What is paperless DSC?
Paperless DSC is the process of applying for DSC using either your Aadhaar card or your PAN card and for Organisations using GST. This is currently applicable for both individual certificates and organisation DSC and the whole process is online, and no physical documents are required.
What is Aadhaar-based issuance?
Digital signature is issued based on validation of applicant using Aadhaar offline e-kyc process (paperless).
What is PAN-based issuance?
Digital signature is issued based on validation of applicant using Aadhaar offline e-kyc process (paperless).
Do you need physical documents?
No physical documents are required as it is fully online process.
How long does it take to get my digital signature?
Digital signature certificates can be ready same day (working hours), provided the applicant completes all verification steps, including video recording.

How do I renew my certificate?
